September 8-29, 2017, at the initiative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambaev, the first International Scientific and Practical Conference on "Islam in a Modern Secular State" was held. The organizers were the State Commission for Religious Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Foundation for the Development of Spiritual Culture "Yyman".
This is the first international conference in Central Asia where more than one hundred scientists from the near and far abroad, representatives of state bodies, researchers on Islam and authoritative international organizations took part. Including the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of India Mushabar Javad Akbar, State Councilor of the Head of Uzbekistan Rustam Kamilov, the Minister of Culture of Egypt Helmi Alnamnam, the Minister for Religious Affairs and Civil Society of Kazakhstan Nurlan Yermekbayev and others.
The purpose of this international project is to preserve the cultural identity of national states, to prevent the penetration of radical ideas under the guise of promoting religious values, and ultimately to enhance the effectiveness of democratic governance in the religious sphere.
The event was opened by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambaev. He noted that in recent years much has been done in Kyrgyzstan to create conditions for the possibility of free implementation of the principle of religious freedom with the simultaneous protection of the foundations of traditional and enlightened Islam and the development of interfaith dialogue. In addition, he stressed that the imposition of another's culture under the guise of Islam often leads to intolerance and division.
"True Islam contains a great potential for building peace and harmony in society, uniting people on the basis of universal values, preaching tolerance. However, Islamophobia, demonization of Islam by some media distorts its true essence; show it in the light of the threat. Not Islam is the cause of today's problems and brutal clashes in many countries of the world, but geopolitical games, social injustice and extremists of all stripes, often covered with the name of Islam, "Atambaev added.
From NISS KR the report on the theme "Foundations of complementarity of the traditional Kyrgyz worldview and Islam" was presented. The report says that the main reason for the flourishing of the Muslim world was to find ways of organically combining faith and national cultures, traditions and development, mutual respect and cooperation between different ethnic groups and cultures.
Following the results of the conference, a declaration was adopted reflecting the decision to create a permanent operating international platform in Bishkek to discuss the place and role of Islam in modern secular states.
